What is Prednisone?

Last week I’m attacked by vicious allergic disease. I’m visiting my doctor for a medication. There is no clear root cause of my allergic disease. The doctor gave me some allergic medicine. There was one allergic medicine that I never known before. This made me embittered. This name is PREDNISONE. I tried to ask this allergic medicine to UNCLE GOOGLE and here is the description I found.

Why it is prescribed: Prednisone, a corticosteroid, is similar to a natural hormone produced by our adrenal glands. It relieves inflammation (swelling, heat, redness, and pain) and is used to-treat certain forms of arthiritis and skin, blood, kidney, eye, thyroid, and intestinal disorders (e.g., colitis). Prednisone also is used with other drugs to prevent rejection of transplanted organs and to treat ceratain types of cancer, severe allergies, and asthma.

When it is to be taken:
  1. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part that you do not understand.
  2. If you are to take prednisone every other day, take it at breakfast on the first day and do not take it at all on the second day. Then take it at breakfast on the third day, do not take it at all on the fourth day, and so on.
  3. If you are to take prenisone once a day, take it in the morning with breakfast.
  4. If you are to take prednisone more than once a day, take it at evenly spaced intervals between the time you wake up in the morning and the time you go to the bed at night. For example, if your doctor tells you to take it three times a day, take it at 7 a.m., and 11 p.m.
How it should be taken: Prednisone comes in tablets, oral liquid, concentrate, and syrup to be taken orally. Your prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose. You may obtain a specially marked measuring spoon to be sure of an accurate dose of the solution and syrup. Use the specially marked dropper that comes with the concentrate to measure the dose.

Special Instruction :
  1. Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. If you take prednisone for a long time, you probably will have periodic blood test; X-rays; eye examinations; blood pressure, height, and weight measurements; and physical examinations.
  2. Checkups are particularly important for children because prednisone can slow bone growth.
  3. Prednisone must be taken regularly to be effective. However, do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer period than your doctor has directed.
  4. If your condition worsens, contact your doctor; your dose may need to be adjusted. Do not stop taking prednisone without consulting your doctor.
  5. Stopping the drug abruptly can cause loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, stupor, headache, fever, joint and muscle pain, peeling skin, and weight loss.
  6. If you take large doses for a long time, your doctor probably will want to decrease your dose gradually to allow your body to adjust before stopping the drug completely.
  7. Your doctor may instruct you to weigh yourself every day. Report any unusual weight gain. Tell every doctor, dentist, and surgeon who treats you that you take prednisone.
  8. Your doctor may instruct you to follow a low-sodium, low-salt, potassium-rich, or high-protein diet. Follow these directions.
  9. When you start to take prednisone, ask your doctor what to do if you forget a dose. Write down these instructions so that you can refer to them later.
  10. In general, if you take prednisone every other day and remember a missed dose on the morning of the day you should have taken it, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If you remember as missed dose on that afternoon, start a new schedule. Take the missed dose on the next morning, do not take it at all on day two, and take the nextdose on the morning of day three.
  11. If you take prednisone once a day, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If you do not remember a missed dose until it is time for your next dose, omit the missed dose completely and take only the regularly scheduled dose.
  12. If you take more than one dose a day, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it; then take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals. If you remember a missed dose when it is time for you to take another, you may take both doses at one time.
Side Effects :
  1. Nausea, vomiting, stomach irritation. Take this medication with food or milk. If these effects persist or your stools become black and tarry, contact your doctor.
  2. Headache, dizziness, insomnia, restlessness, depression, anxiety, unusual moods, acne, thinned skin, increased sweating, increased hair growth, reddened face, easy bruising, tiny purple skin spots, irregular or absent menstrual periods. If these effects persist or are severe, contact your doctor.
  3. Skin irritation, itching, or swelling . Contact your doctor at once.
  4. Long-term therapy problems: weight gain; swollen feet, ankles, and lower legs; muscle pain and weakness; eye pain; vision problems; puffy skin; a cold or infection that lasts a long time. Contact your doctor.
Other Precautions :
  1. Before you take prednisone, tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially aspirin, arthritis medication, anticoagulants, diuretics, estrogen (e.g., birth-control pills), phenytoin, rifampin, and Phenobarbital.
  2. Do not have a vaccination, other immunization, or any skin test while you are taking prednisone unless your doctor specifically tells you that you may.
  3. Before you take prednisone, tell your doctor if you are pregnant, think that you may be pregnant, wish to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. Prednisone can harm an unborn or breast-fed baby.
  4. Before you take prednisone, tell your doctor your entire medical history, particularly if you have liver, kidney, intestinal, or heart disease an under active thyroid high blood pressure; myasthenia gravis; osteoporosis; herpes eye infection; or a history of tuberculosis, seizures, ulcers, or blood clots.
  5. If you have a history of ulcers or take large doses of aspirin or other arthritis medication, limit your consumption of alcoholic beverages while taking prednisone.
  6. Prednisone can make your stomach and intestines more susceptible to the irritating effects of alcohol, aspirin, and certain arthritis medications, increasing your risk of ulcers.
  7. Report any injuries or signs of infection that occur during treatment and within 12months after treatment with prednisone. Your dose may need to be adjusted or you may need to start taking the drug again.
  8. If you have diabetes, prednisone may increase your blood sugar level. Test your urine for glucose frequently and contact your doctor if sugar is present; your dose of diabetes medication and your diet may need to be changed. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.
Storage Conditions :
  1. Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children.
  2. Store it at room temperature.

Important information about swine flu

Swine flu is the common name given to a new strain of influenza (flu). It is called swine flu because it is thought to have originated in pigs, but this is not certain. Swine flu (swine influenza) is a respiratory disease caused by viruses (influenza viruses) that infect the respiratory tract of pigs and result in nasal secretions, a barking-like cough, decreased appetite, and listless behavior. The viruses name is H1N1 virus.

Swine flu produces most of the same symptoms in pigs as human flu produces in people. Swine flu can last about one to two weeks in pigs that survive. Swine influenza virus was first isolated from pigs in 1930 in the U.S. and has been recognized by pork producers and veterinarians to cause infections in pigs worldwide.

Symptoms

So far, most swine flu cases have been mild, with symptoms similar to those of seasonal flu. Only a small number of people have had more serious symptoms.

If you or a member of your family has a fever or high temperature (over 38°C/100.4°F) and two or more of the following symptoms, you may have swine flu:
  • Unusual tiredness,
  • Cough
  • Headache,
  • Runny nose,
  • Sore throat,
  • Chills
  • Shortness of breathes or coughs,
  • Loss of appetite,
  • Aching muscles,
  • Diarrhea or vomiting.
How dangerous is it?

It is difficult to judge this at the moment. Like any other type of flu, people can die from swine flu if they develop complications, such as pneumonia. There have been deaths, but for most infected people the symptoms have not been severe. It appears that early doses of antiviral medicines such as Tamiflu and Relenza are effective in helping people to recover.

  • People between 6 months and 24 years of age, and
  • People from the ages of 25 through 64 who are at higher risk because of chronic health disorders such as asthma, diabetes, or a weakened immune system.
Although five companies are making H1N1 swine flu shots, including Sanofi Pasteur, Novartis, GSK, Medimmune and CSL, doctors won't be able to directly order swine flu vaccine from them. Instead, the federal government is purchasing all of the swine flu shots and then is distributing them via a centralized distribution program. Pediatricians and other health care providers can order swine flu vaccine if they want to receive swine flu vaccine to give their patients.

As with ordinary flu, people who come down with swine flu should take lots of rest and use standard paracetamol-based cold remedies to reduce their temperature and help relieve symptoms.

Some of the over-the-counter treatments used by adults can be given to children for the relief of the symptoms of flu, in line with the instructions supplied with each medicine. However, children under 16 must not be given aspirin or ready-made flu remedies containing aspirin. It is important to always read the label or check with the pharmacist that a medicine is suitable for use in children.

How to prevent from swine flu?

Preventing the spread of germs is the most effective way to slow the spread of diseases such as swine flu. You should always:
  • Ensure everyone washes their hands regularly with soap and water,
  • Clean surfaces regularly to get rid of germs,
  • Use tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and
  • Put used tissues in a bin as soon as possible.
  • Cleaning hard surfaces, such as door handles, often and thoroughly using a normal cleaning product

There are several reason for many people being vegetarian. For their religious view, health concern, or sometimes their care for animals. Being Vegetarian means not including meat, poultry or fish on their menu. Other vegetarian exclude dairy products and eggs. Vegetarian and vegan diets can vary widely, but the empirical evidence largely relates to the nutritional content and health effects of the average diet of well-educated vegetarians living in Western countries, together with some information on vegetarians in non-Western countries. In general, vegetarian diets provide relatively large amounts of cereals, pulses, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Cross-sectional studies of vegetarians and vegans have shown that on average they have a relatively low BMI and a low plasma cholesterol concentration; recent studies have also shown higher plasma homocysteine concentrations than in non-vegetarians.



Very high homocysteine levels in the blood can damage the lining of the arteries. In addition, high homocysteine levels may make blood clot more easily than it should. This can increase the risk of blood vessel blockages. A clot inside your blood vessel is called a thrombus which can travel in the bloodsteam and get stuck in your lungs (called a pulmonary embolism), in your brain (which can cause a stroke) or in your heart (which can cause a heart attack.)

In several studies, Vegetarians have shown a moderate reduction in mortality from Ischemic Heart Disease but little difference in other major causes of death or all-cause mortality in comparison with health-conscious non-vegetarians from the same population.

Vegetarian diets, particularly vegan diets, are associated with lower BMD, (bone mineral density) which is one of osteoporosis cause., but the magnitude of the association is clinically insignificant.

TORONTO,Kompas.com --- Para ibu yang menderita mual pada pagi hari selama masa hamil memiliki peluang lebih baik untuk memiliki bayi yang lebih cerdas. Demikian temuan beberapa ilmuwan Kanada.

Beberapa peneliti di Hospital for Sick Children’s Motherisk Program, Toronto, mendapati bahwa mual pagi hari muncul berkaitan dengan peningkatan perkembangan syaraf pada janin.

Bagi tujuan studi tersebut, 121 perempuan hamil direkrut antara 1998 dan 2003 melalui jalur penghubung mual pagi hari yang dikelola oleh Motherisk Program.


Peserta studi itu dibagi menjadi tiga kelompok: ibu yang mengalami mual pagi hari dan dirawat dengan "dicletin" (obat yang digunakan dalam perawatan mual dan muntah selama masa hamil); mereka yang mengalami mual pagi hari dan tak diberi "dicletin"; dan mereka yang tak mengalami mual pagi hari.

Kecerdasan dan prilaku anak-anak pada masa kehamilan ibu mereka saat itu dinilai ketika anak-anak itu berusia tiga tahun dan tujuh tahun. Anak-anak tersebut diberikan tes psikologi yang seusia dengan usia mereka, termasuk tindakan kecerdasan dan prilaku, demikian laporan kantor berita resmi China, Xinhua.

Faktor lain seperti IQ ibu, jumlah rokok yang dihisap setiap hari, konsumsi alkohol dan status sosial-ekonomi juga diperhitungkan. Studi tersebut mendapati bahwa semua anak di dalam ketiga kelompok tersebut memiliki nilai dalam kategori normal dalam hasil perkembangan syaraf. Tetapi anak dari ibu yang mengalami mual pagi hari memiliki nilai lebih tinggi dalam penampilan IQ, kefasihan lisan, pemrosesan fonologi dan ingatan akan angka.

Secara luar biasa, para peneliti itu menemukan, makin parah mual pagi hari, makin mungkin anak yang dikandung meraih nilai lebih tinggi. Mereka menyatakan bahwa IQ ibu juga memainkan peran dalam hasil tersebut. Hasil penelitian mereka disiarkan di dalam edisi online "The Jounal of Pediatrics".

Vitamin C Turunkan Kadar Asam Urat

VITAMIN C ternyata tak hanya bagus untuk memperbaiki kondisi tubuh usai operasi atau saat lemah, melainkan juga baik bagi mereka yang menderita penyakit asam urat atau gout, satu bentuk rematik yang menyebabkan munculnya peradangan pada sendi-sendi.

"Asupan vitamin C menyediakan pilihan lain yang bermanfaat dalam mencegah penyakit asam urat," jelas Dr. Hyon Choi dan koleganya dari universitas British Columbia di Vancouver, Kanada.

Korban-korban penyakit gout memiliki ciri biasanya berusia 40-an atau lebih dan pria, meski kadang juga wanita. Vitamin C dikatakan para ahli ini dapat menurunkan kadar asam urat dalam darah.

Gout, merupakan penyakit yang dapat menyebabkan kerusakan permanen pada sendi dan terkait dengan penyalahgunaan alkohol, kegemukan, tekanan darah tinggi dan diet tinggi daging serta keju.

Di Amerika Serikat, penyakit ini nyaris menyerang sekitar 3 juta warga. Sebuah observasi atas 47.000 pria Amerika dari tahun 1986 hingga 2006 dengan beragam masalah kesehatan menemukan bahwa setiap 500 mg vitamin C yang dikonsumsi menurunkan risiko terkena gout hingga 17 persen.

Obesity and heart transplantation

Being obese should not deny a patient having heart transplantation, say a lecture presented during the 56th Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology.

Guidelines for listing candidates for heart transplant were recently revised to include obesity ( BMI greater than 30kg/m2) as a potential reason for denial. However, the supporting evidence for the recommendation was very weak, so that researchers from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York examined if there was indeed a link between pre-heart transplant BMI and post-transplant survival using data from United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).

In this study, experts looked at more than 18000 first-time adult transplant recipients between 1995 and 2005. Subjects were divided into standard BMI categories: underweight, normal, overweight, obese, severely obese and morbidly obese.

Findings from the study showed that while the normal weight patients had the best survival (10.1 years), there was no statistical difference in the survival after transplantation among obese patients (9.6 years) and among the less severely overweight patients (9.7 years).

The findings, according to Dr. Mark Russo, lead researcher of the study, do not support the recommendation, but that, to the contrary, it shows that obese patients do not face an increased risk of death after transplantation.

Hitung Darah Lengkap (HDL)

Tes laboratorium yang paling umum adalah hitung darah lengkap (HDL) atau complete blood count (CBC). Tes ini memeriksa jenis sel dalam darah, termasuk sel darah merah, sel darah putih dan trombosit (platelet). Hasil tes menyebutkan jumlahnya dalam darah (misalnya jumlah sel per millimeter kubik) atau persentasenya. Tes laboratorium lain dibahas pada Lembaran Informasi (LI) 107 dan 108.
Semua sel darah dibuat di sumsum tulang. Beberapa obat dan penyakit dapat merusak sumsum tulang sehingga menyebabkan berkurangnya jumlah sel darah merah dan putih.
Setiap laboratorium mempunyai ‘nilai rujukan’ untuk semua hasil tes. Biasanya, tes laboratorium akan memperlihatkan hasil tes yang berada di luar nilai normal. Untuk informasi lebih lanjut mengenai hasil tes laboratorium, lihat LI 105.
Laporan hasil sering sulit ditafsirkan. Beberapa angka dilaporkan dengan satuan ‘x10.e3’ atau ‘x103’. Ini berarti jumlah yang dicatat harus dikalikan 1.000. Contohnya, bila hasil adalah 8,77 dengan unit ‘x10.e3’, jumlah sebenarnya adalah 8.770.

Tes Sel Darah Merah

Sel darah merah, yang juga disebut sebagai eritrosit, bertugas mengangkut oksigen dari paru ke seluruh tubuh. Fungsi ini dapat diukur melalui tiga macam tes. Hitung Sel Darah Merah (red blood cell count/RBC) yang menghitung jumlah total sel darah merah; hemoglobin (Hb) yaitu protein dalam sel darah merah yang bertugas mengangkut oksigen dari paru ke bagian tubuh lainnya; dan hematokrit (Ht atau HCT) yang mengukur persentase sel darah merah dalam seluruh volume darah.
Orang yang tinggal di dataran tinggi umumnya mempunyai lebih banyak sel darah merah. Ini merupakan upaya tubuh mengatasi kekurangan oksigen. Eritrosit, Hb dan Ht yang sangat rendah menunjukkan adanya anemia, yaitu sel tidak mendapat cukup oksigen untuk berfungsi secara normal. Jika kita anemia, kita sering merasa lelah dan terlihat pucat. Tentang kelelahan, lihat LI 551 dan anemia, LI 552.
Volume Eritrosit Rata-Rata (VER) atau mean corpuscular volume (MCV) mengukur besar rata-rata sel darah merah. MCV yang kecil berarti ukuran sel darah merahnya lebih kecil dari ukuran normal. Biasanya hal ini disebabkan oleh kekurangan zat besi atau penyakit kronis. MCV yang besar dapat disebabkan oleh obat HIV, terutama AZT dan d4T. Ini tidak berbahaya. MCV yang besar menunjukkan adanya anemia megaloblastik, dengan sel darah merahnya besar dan berwarna muda. Biasanya hal ini disebabkan oleh kekurangan asam folat.
Red Blood Cell Distribution Width (RDW) mengukur lebar sel darah merah. Hasil tes ini dapat membantu mendiagnosis jenis anemia dan kekurangan beberapa vitamin.
Hemoglobin Eritrosit Rata-Rata (HER) atau mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) dan Konsentrasi Hemoglobin Eritrosit Rata-Rata (KHER) atau mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC atau CHCM) masing-masing mengukur jumlah dan kepekatan hemoglobin. MCH dihitung dengan membagi hemoglobin total dengan jumlah sel darah merah total.
Trombosit atau platelet (PT atau PLT) berfungsi membantu menghentikan perdarahan dengan membentuk gumpalan dan keropeng. Jika trombosit kita kurang, kita mudah mengalami perdarahan atau memar. Orang HIV-positif kadang trombositnya rendah (disebut trombositopenia). Obat HIV dapat mengatasi keadaan ini. Trombosit tinggi biasanya tidak punya pengaruh besar pada kesehatan.

Tes Sel Darah Putih

Sel darah putih (disebut juga leukosit) membantu melawan infeksi dalam tubuh kita.
Hitung Sel Darah Putih (white blood cell count/WBC) adalah jumlah total sel darah putih. Leukosit tinggi (hitung sel darah putih yang tinggi) artinya tubuh kita sedang melawan infeksi. Leukosit rendah artinya ada masalah dengan sumsum tulang. Leukosit rendah disebut leukopenia atau sitopenia yang berarti tubuh kurang mampu melawan infeksi. Neutrofil berfungsi melawan infeksi bakteri, dan dilaporkan sebagai persentase leukosit atau %NEUT. Biasa jumlahnya 55-70 persen. Jika neutrofil kita rendah (disebut neutropenia), kita lebih mudah terkena infeksi bakteri. Penyakit HIV lanjut, obat HIV seperti gansiklovir (untuk mengatasi virus sitomegalo, lihat LI 501) dan AZT (obat antiretroviral; lihat LI 420) dapat menyebabkan neutropenia.
Ada dua jenis utama limfosit: sel-B untuk membuat antibodi, protein khusus yang menyerang kuman; dan sel-T untuk menyerang dan membunuh kuman, serta membantu mengatur sistem kekebalan tubuh. Salah satu jenis sel-T adalah sel CD4, yang diinfeksi dan dibunuh oleh HIV (lihat LI 412). Jumlah limfosit umumnya 20-40 persen leukosit. Hitung darah lengkap biasanya tidak termasuk tes CD4. Tes CD4 ini harus diminta sebagai tambahan. Hasil hitung darah lengkap tetap dibutuhkan untuk menghitung jumlah CD4, sehingga dua tes ini umumnya dilakukan sekaligus.
Monosit atau makrofag diukur sebagai persentase leukosit (%MONO) dan biasanya 2-8 persen. Sel ini melawan infeksi dengan ‘memakan’ kuman dan memberi tahu sistem kekebalan tubuh mengenai kuman apa yang ditemukan. Monosit beredar dalam darah. Bila monosit ada di jaringan tubuh, mereka disebut makrofag. Jumlah monosit yang tinggi menunjukkan adanya infeksi bakteri.
Eosinofil (%EOS) biasanya 1-3 persen leukosit. Sel ini terlibat dengan alergi dan tanggapan terhadap parasit. Kadang kala penyakit HIV dapat menyebabkan jumlah eosinofil yang tinggi. Jumlah meningkat terutama jika kita diare, kentut, atau perut kembung. Hal ini menandai adanya parasit.
Fungsi basofil (%BASO) tidak begitu dipahami, namun sel ini terlibat dalam reaksi alergi jangka panjang, misalnya asma atau alergi kulit. Sel ini jumlahnya kurang dari 1 persen leukosit.
Persentase limfosit (%LYMP) mengukur lima jenis sel darah putih: neutrofil, limfosit, monosit, eosinofil dan basofil, dalam bentuk persentase leukosit. Untuk memperoleh limfosit total, nilai ini dikalikan dengan leukosit. Misalnya, bila limfosit 30,2 persen dan leukosit 8.770, limfosit totalnya adalah 0,302 x 8.770 = 2.648.

This is the medical name for high blood pressure. It can be caused by many things including stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, anxiety & smoking.

There are a number of things you can do to help reduce your blood pressure; I recommend that you do this with support of your doctor or qualified health practitioner:



· Eat a more balanced diet, with less dairy & full fat products; less red meat (6oz a week is a good guide), & definitely cut out sugar. Read the labels of everything you buy to be aware of hidden sugars.

· Replace your usual cooking oil with organic, cold pressed olive oil.

· Reduce your intake of salt, including peanuts, crisps, crackers & processed or junk foods.

· Some people have found that taking co-enzyme Q10 can help reduce high blood pressure, especially if they are on statins. Speak to your GP & health food shop for advice.

· Others also find that ensuring they get enough B complex vitamins is helpful. So either eat plenty of organic green leafy vegetables, or obtain a good quality supplement from your health food shop. Liquid vitamins are the best; followed by capsules, tablet form being the least effective & healthy option.

· Ensure you are absorbing enough calcium & eat plenty of raw green vegetables, artichokes & parsley. In one study conducted by DR McCarron, 45% of the subjects who were given a 1000mg/day calcium supplement normalised their blood pressure.

· Australian researchers have discovered that blood pressure can be reduced by increasing the fibre & protein in your diet. So long as you do not have a kidney disorder, increasing your intake of (organic where possible) fresh fruit & vegetables, & soya protein in particular, you may well be able to get your blood pressure under control.

· Quit smoking! There are support measures that can help, e.g. counselling, hypnotherapy, help lines, etc. see your GP, health practitioner or local library for details.

· Get fit. Again seek out local facilities which suit you for taking up exercise you enjoy. Go with a friend to give you both support. Reward yourself with something appropriate when you achieve goals & make these reasonable, i.e. start off with small steps & build up to a routine you enjoy. 20 minutes of aerobic exercise, 3 times a week is the current government recommendation, but anything is an improvement.

· Get de-stressed! Research shows that if you counteract stressful situations with de-stressing activity, you will be less fraught, function better, & be healthier. So indulge in time out or a therapy that suits you on a regular basis. No need to feel guilty; everyone around you will prefer the more relaxed you, & you will be more healthy & have more energy to spend on yourself & others. Massage, aromatherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, reflexology to name but a few are all therapies that can help.

· Increase your consumption of garlic, cherries, strawberries, oranges, grapes, olives, wholegrain rice & rye.

· Cut down or cut out salt. Check all your food labels for hidden salt.

· Garlic & hawthorn are excellent & natural ways of controlling your blood pressure.

· Lavender, may chang & sweet marjoram essential oils all have hypotensive qualities, which means they help lower your blood pressure as well as reducing anxiety. Use them in a relaxing bath, burn them in an oil diffuser, or add them to an oil/cream & massage it into your body as part of your daily body care routine.

· Grapes may help reduce high blood pressure due to the flavenoids they contain. However, you would need to eat a large bunch daily, so as part of a balanced diet they would be a wise inclusion.

Cancer Prevention

An excerpt from the book A Living Miracle

This truly is the way to go! Though I wrote this book principally for people who have recently been diagnosed with this serious health challenge and those that care for them – I would also hope that many more interested readers will incorporate my prevention techniques into their daily lives – especially if cancer has been the cause of death of a family member, which greatly accentuates one’s risk:

1. Eat a variety of organically produced foods – no single foodstuff provides all the nutrients that a person requires. It is important, therefore, to eat a wide variety of foods every day of your lives, including lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pulses, nuts and seeds.

2. Maintain not just an ‘average’ bodyweight, but strive for an optimum weight and lean to fat ratio, to minimise strain on organs and joints and possible future health problems.

3. Avoid too much fat in general and saturated fat from animal products in particular. A diet low in total fat may reduce the risk for cancers of the breast, prostate, colon, and rectum. Such a diet will likely be low in saturated fat and cholesterol and may also reduce risk of heart disease.

4. Eat foods with adequate amounts of complex carbohydrate and fibre. In my practice, I find most people following a Western based diet eat inadequate amounts of natural whole grains in their natural sprouted state. I recommend an increase in the amount of these foods within your daily prevention plan by eating more fruits, vegetables, sweet potatoes, whole grains and pulses. A high natural-fibre diet may reduce the risk of colon and rectal cancer.

5. Avoid too much sugar. How sugar feeds cancer is explained a little further on. A diet high in sugar promotes tooth decay.Sugary foods are also often high in fat and calories and low in vitamins and minerals.

6. Avoid too much sodium. Too much sodium in the diet may contribute to high blood pressure, especially for people with a family history of high blood pressure. Untreated high blood pressure can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease.

7. I do not advocate the use of alcohol, when one is considering preventing cancer. However, if you do drink alcoholic beverages, please restrict to one or two small glasses of organically produced red wine once or twice each week. This will provide a few antioxidant compounds. Drinking too much can lead to many health problems. Heavy drinking is associated with cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus and liver. Cancer risk is especially high for heavy drinkers who also smoke. Alcoholic drinks are also high in calories and deplete your vitamin and mineral status.

KE KENTALAN DARAH DALAM TUBUH, MENGAPA TERJADI???

Ada satu pertanyaan yang masuk ke mailbox saya, yaitu "Mengapa harus minum air putih banyak-banyak. .?"
Sebenarnya jawabannya cukup "mengerikan" tetapi karena sebuah pertanyaan jujur harus dijawab dengan jujur, maka topik tersebut bisa dijelaskan sbb:

Kira-kira 80% tubuh manusia terdiri dari air. Malah ada beberapa bagian tubuh kita yang memiliki kadar air di atas 80%. Dua organ paling penting dengan kadar air di atas 80% adalah : Otak dan Darah. !!

Otak memiliki komponen air sebanyak 90%, sementara darah memiliki Komponen air 95%. Jatah minum manusia normal sedikitnya adalah 2 liter sehari atau 8 gelas sehari.Jumlah di atas harus ditambah bila anda seorang perokok. Air sebanyak itu diperlukan untuk mengganti cairan yang keluar dari tubuh kita lewat air seni, keringat, pernapasan, dan sekresi.

Apa yang terjadi bila kita mengkonsumsi kurang dari 2 liter sehari...?

Tentu tubuh akan menyeimbangkan diri. Caranya...?

Dengan jalan "menyedot" air dari komponen tubuh sendiri. Dari otak...?

Belum sampai segitunya (wihh...bayangkan otak kering gimana jadinya...), melainkan dari sumber terdekat : Darah. !!

Darah yang disedot airnya akan menjadi kental. Akibat pengentalan darah ini, maka perjalanannya akan kurang lancar ketimbang yang encer.

Saat melewati ginjal (tempat menyaring racun dari darah), ginjal akan bekerja extra keras menyaring darah. Dan karena saringan dalam ginjal halus, tidak jarang darah yang kentalbisa menyebabkan perobekan pada glomerulus ginjal. Akibatnya, air seni anda berwarna kemerahan, tanda mulai bocornya saringan ginjal. Bila dibiarkan terus menerus, anda mungkin suatu saat harus menghabiskan 400.000 rupiah seminggu untuk cuci darah.
Eh, tadi saya sudah bicara tentang otak kan...? Nah saat darah kental meng alir lewat otak, perjalanannya agak terhambat. Otak tidak lagi "encer", dan karena sel-sel otak adalah yang paling boros mengkonsumsi makanan dan oksigen. Lambatnya aliran darah ini bisa menyebabkan sel-sel otak cepat mati atau tidak berfungsi sebagaimana mestinya..(ya wajarlah namanya juga kurang makan...)

Bila ini ditambah dengan penyakit jantung (yang juga kerjanya tambah berat bila darah mengental... ), maka serangan stroke bisa lebih lekas datang.

Sekarang tinggal anda pilih: melakukan "investasi" dengan minum sedikitnya 8 gelas sehari -atau- "membayar bunga" lewat sakit ginjal atau stroke.

Increase in the production of hormones will encourage acne growth. If you are under stress because of work, school or social problems you might need some form of relaxation to help you out.

Any sort of exercise like yoga or walking will help ease your stress and eventually your acne.
It is of utmost importance to avoid food and drinks that increase hormonal increase. This type of food includes caffeine, dairy products, carbohydrates and meat eventually produce toxins that will need to get out through your skin. Keluarnya Sel Telur Dari Ovarium Seorang Wanita

UNTUK pertama kalinya dalam sejarah para ahli di Belgia belum lama ini berhasil merekam dengan sangat jelas proses awal pada reproduksi manusia, yakni keluarnya sel telur dari ovarium seorang wanita.

Adalah ginekolog Dr Jacques Donnez dari Universitas Katolik Louvain (UCL) di Brussels yang berhasil merekam proses pelepasan oosit dari ovarium ketika ia sedang melakukan operasi histerektomi atau pengangkatan kandungan (rahim, uterus) seorang wanita. Gambar-gambar yang menakjubkan ini juga dipublikasikan dalam majalah New Scientist.

Secara alami, wanita normal mengeluarkan satu hingga beberapa sel telur setiap bulan ketika memasuki masa-masa subur. Namun begitu, sejauh ini belum ada ahli yang mampu merekam secara jelas dan detail momen-momen keluarnya sel telur manusi dari organ wanita.


Sel telur dalam gambar tersebut adalah milik seorang perempuan berusia 45 tahun asal Belgia.

Sel telur dihasilkan oleh folikel-folikel, kantung-kantung berisi cairan, di bagian dalam ovarium yang pada masa ovulasi akan mengeluarkan benjolan (protrusi) kecil berwarna kemerahan yang terlihat dalam gambar. Telur-telur akan muncul pada ujung benjolan tersebut dengan bentuk sel-sel yang mirip jeli. Setelah keluar dan lepas dari benjolan tersebut, sel-sel kemudian akan berkelana menuju tuba falopi di mana nantinya akan dibuahi oleh sel sperma dari seorang pria.

Sel telur dalam gambar tersebut adalah milik seorang perempuan berusia 45 tahun asal Belgia. Donnez mengatakan, beberapa teori mengindikasikan bahwa pelepasan sel telur dalam ovarium bersifat "eksplosif", namun apa yang direkamnya ini berlangsung sekitar 15 menit.

Makanan Apa Yang Harus Di Hindari Selama Kehamilan???

Banyak pertanyaan dikalangan ibu hamil tentang makanan apa saja yang boleh dan yang sebaiknya dihindari selama masa kehamilan, dan kenapa?.....

Ada beberapa jenis makanan yang sebaiknya dihindari selama kehamilan karena mereka dapat menyebabkan infeksi-infeksi seperti; salmonella,toksoplasmosis,listeria, E.coli, yang dapat membahayakan bayi dalam kandungan anda.

  • Jangan makan daging mentah (sushi) atau yang dimasak kurang matang, karena mengandung Toksoplasmosis sebuah parasit yang dapat menyebabkan infeksi serius pada janin anda dan juga E.coli, yang berbahaya bagi ibu hamil dan janin.
  • Toksoplasmosis terdapat pada sayuran yang tidak dicuci dengan baik, oleh karena itu bersihkan sayuran anda dengan baik, apalagi untuk salad atau lalapan yang dimakan mentah. Hindari juga kotoran kucing atau bermain-main dengan kucing selama kehamilan karena mengandung toksoplasmosis.
  • Jangan makan daging ayam dan telur yang dimasak kurang matang atau mentah , hindari makan hati ayam/daging yang mungkin sumber dari salmonella, yang dapat menyebabkan diare yang berat pada ibu hamil. Juga diperhatikan piring, alat-alat masakan yang terkena daging ayam mentah ini untuk dicuci.
  • Ikan tuna steak, ikan sea bass, shark, atau ikan-ikan berukuran besar yang diketahui mengandung tingkat mercuri yang tinggi yang dapat menyebabkan kerusakan saraf jika dimakan dalam jumlah besar. FDA rekomendasi ikan tuna dan ikan ukuran besar ini sebatas 12 ons perminggu
  • Keju lunak seperti brie dan camembert, blueveined cheese juga keju dari susu kambing dan domba, serta jangan minum susu yang tidak di pasteurisasi. Semua produk ini mempunyai resiko membawa listeria. Listeria tipe bakteri yang mampu menembus plasenta dan menyebabkan infeksi janin, pada dewasa tidak ada gejala atau seperti flu. Listeria dapat menyebabkan keguguran,kelahiran premature, dan keracunan dalam darah. Sebaiknya hindari makanan jenis ini sampai melahirkan bayi anda.
  • Jangan minum yang mengandung alcohol dapat menyebabkan kelainan perkembangan pada janin ada juga problem emosional pada bayi.
  • Minuman yang mengandung cafein seperti kopi, teh sebaiknya di hindari atau dibatasi karena kopi dapat memperngaruhi berat badan rendah pada bayi, keguguran dan juga cafein mengurangi penyerapan zat besi.

Ingatlah perkembangan bayi dalam kandungan anda tergantung dari apa yang anda makan selama kehamilan.

Bugar dan Sehat Saat Hamil Tanpa Anemia

Bagi pasangan yang sudah lama mendambakan momongan maka akan merasa bahagia apabila sang istri mendapat kehamilan. Tetapi seringkali kebahagiaan itu tidak tercermin pada raut muka sang calon ibu yang tampak pucat, lemah dan lesu. Kondisi tersebut sering kali dianggap hal yang wajar, bahkan ada yang beranggapan hal tersebut merupakan bawaan dari sang bayi. Banyak dari wanita hamil tersebut yang tidak menyadari kalau ternyata dirinya mengalami kurang darah atau anemia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 7-8 wanita dari 10 wanita hamil menderita anemia. Kemudian karena konsekwensinya yang tidak ringan seperti pendarahan saat melahirkan dan melahirkan secara prematur, maka sangat penting bagi calon ibu untuk menjaga kesehatannya atau mendapat pengobatan agar terlepas dari anemia.

5L Pada Wanita Hamil, Normalkah?

5L (lesu, lemah, letih, lelah, dan lunglai) merupakan gejala anemia yang sering diabaikan oleh calon ibu. Pada trisemester pertama sebagian besar wanita hamil akan mengalami mual dan muntah yang disinyalir dapat menyebabkan calon ibu tampak lemah dan lesu. Kalaupun pada trisemester pertama ini hilangnya darah menstruasi tidak terjadi tetapi kebutuhan zat pembentukan darah terutama zat besi cenderung meningkat sejalan dengan meningkatnya usia kehamilan.

Bila mual dan muntah sudah hilang, tetapi calon ibu cenderung tetap mengalami 5L, maka hal ini bukanlah hal yang normal dan perlu penanganan yang serius. Penting bagi calon ibu untuk terhindar dari anemia supaya bisa menghindari terjadinya kelahiran prematur hingga pendarahan berlebihan pada persalinan yang dapat mengancam nyawa ibu dan bayinya hingga 70%. Dengan tidak adanya anemia, calon ibu akan tampak bugar dan sehat sehingga dapat menjalankan aktivitas kesehariannya dengan baik.

Gejala dan Diagnosa Anemia pada Wanita Hamil

Sesuai kodratnya wanita lebih banyak membutuhkan zat besi baik saat hamil maupun tidak dibandingkan pria.Pada wanita yang mengalami menstruasi akan kehilangan zat besi dua kali lipat dibandingkan pria yaitu sekitar 2,4 mg perhari, padahal porsi makan wanita cenderung lebih sedikit dibanding pria. Akibatnya bahkan sebelum hamil pun kebanyakan wanita sudah mengalami anemia, ditambah dengan kehamilan akan memperparah anemia.

Pada trisemester kedua dan seterusnya kebutuhan zat pembentuk darah terutama zat besi meningkat tajam hingga dua kali lipat dibandingkan saat tidak hamil. Keadaan ini disebabkan volume darah ibu meningkat karena kebutuhan janin akan oksigen dan zat gizi yang dibawa oleh sel darah merah. Kemudian saat melahirkan sudah tentu akan terjadi pendarahan yang memerlukan penggantian darah secepatnya.

Sayangnya gejala 5L baru muncul begitu anemia dalam tingkat yang lanjut. Berikut adalah tingkatan anemia :

  1. Stadium 1

Kehilangan zat besi melebihi asupannya, sehingga menghabiskan cadangan dalam tubuh, terutama di sumsum tulang. Kadar ferritin (protein yang menampung zat besi) dalam darah berkurang secara progresif.

  1. Stadium 2

Cadangan besi yang telah berkurang tidak dapat memenuhi kebutuhan untuk pembentukan sel darah merah, sehingga sel darah merah yang dihasilkan jumlahnya lebih sedikit.

  1. Stadium 3

Mulai terjadi anemia. Pada awal stadium ini, sel darah merah tampak normal, tetapi jumlahnya lebih sedikit. Kadar hemoglobin dan hematokrit menurun.

  1. Stadium 4

Sumsum tulang berusaha untuk menggantikan kekurangan zat besi dengan mempercepat pembelahan sel dan menghasilkan sel darah merah dengan ukuran yang sangat kecil (mikrositik), yang khas untuk anemia karena kekurangan zat besi.

  1. Stadium 5

Dengan semakin memburuknya kekurangan zat besi dan anemia, maka akan timbul gejala-gejala karena kekurangan zat besi dan gejala-gejala karena anemia semakin memburuk.

Anemia sendiri merupakan kondisi dimana kadar hemoglobin (Hb) seseorang kurang dari 10g/dl. Sementara angka idealnya untuk wanita dewasa berdasarkan standar WHO adalah 12g/dl. Artinya, seorang wanita dewasa, baik yang sedang hamil maupun tidak, akan didiagnosa mengalami anemia jika kadar Hb-nya di bawah 12g/dl. Tetapi munculnya gejala sangatlah individual, bisa jadi orang dengan Hb 10g/dl masih beraktivitas normal dan energik sedangkan yang lain nampak letih dan lesu.

Untuk mendiagnosa anemia perlu pemeriksaan darah, biasanya yang diperiksa adalah kadar zat besi. Atau mengukur kadar transferin (protein pengangkut zat besi yang berada diluar sel darah merah) dan kadar ferritin (protein yang menampung zat besi).

Akibat Anemia pada Janin dan Calon Ibu

WHO menyatakan bahwa anemia merupakan penyebab penting dari kematian ibu saat hamil ataupun melahirkan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persentase kematian ibu saat melahirkan akibat anemia adalah 70% dan sekitar 19,7% akibat hal lain. Anemia pada kehamilan juga berhubungan dengan meningkatnya angka kesakitan ibu saat melahirkan.

Pada wanita hamil, anemia meningkatkan frekuensi komplikasi pada kehamilan dan persalinan, seperti meningkatkan resiko terjadinya kematian janin di dalam kandungan, melahirkan secara prematur, atau bayi lahir dengan berat badan rendah, dan juga angka kematian bayi setelah dilahirkan Di samping itu, perdarahan sebelum dan setelah melahirkan lebih sering dijumpai pada wanita yang anemia dan hal ini dapat berakibat fatal, sebab wanita yang anemia tidak dapat mentolerir kehilangan darah.

Pencegahan dan Penanganan Anemia pada Wanita Hamil

Mengkonsumsi makanan yang bergizi adalah hal yang penting tetapi terkadang hal ini tidak cukup. Oleh karenanya sudah menjadi hal umum bila wanita hamil selalu diberi suplemen tambahan yang mengandung zat besi oleh dokter. Selain itu pengaturan usia ibu saat hamil ataupun jarak antara kehamilan juga merupakan hal yang penting, karena dari hasil penelitian menunjukkan saat terbaik bagi wanita untuk terjadi kehamilan adalah pada usia antara 20 hingga 35 tahun. Karena apabila hamil pada usia kurang dari 20 tahun atau lebih dari 35 tahun akan meningkatkan resiko terjadinya anemia.bagi calon ibu.

Untuk Ibu yang mengalami kehamilan lebih dari 4 kali juga dapat meningkatkan resiko untuk mengalami anemia demikian juga apabila jarak antara dua kehamilan kurang dari 2 tahun dapat juga meningkatkan resiko terjadinya anemia.
